Current State and Challenges of Kidney Disease

The number of patients with chronic kidney disease in Japan is currently reported to be 13.3 million. This number has increased by 7 million over the past decade, posing a very serious problem. It is projected to reach approximately 21 million by 2030.

The representative's (Takashima's) father passed away seven years ago from kidney disease. His kidney function began to deteriorate in his 40s, and his legs became swollen. When he visited the hospital, he was immediately admitted. Various medications were tried, but due to financial reasons, he could not undergo treatments such as dialysis. Despite dietary and exercise therapy, his condition worsened, and eventually, he had no choice but to have his leg amputated.

My father ran away from the hospital, fearing the amputation of his leg. After that, he stopped drinking alcohol, but his condition continued to worsen. His liver also deteriorated, he suffered from colon cancer, stomach cancer, and ultimately a blood disorder, which led to his death. I was speaking with a colleague yesterday, and the origin of my father's illness was his kidneys. I have a strong sense of mission to help people like my father, which drives me in this business.

To protect kidneys, solutions such as kidney transplants and dialysis, which have remained unchanged since wartime, are still employed. While new drugs have emerged recently, there's a challenge with kidneys having fine blood vessels, making it difficult for medication to reach them. It has been believed that once kidney function deteriorates, it's difficult to recover.

Our goal for Kidney Tech 3.0 is a new concept to prevent and stop the progression of kidney disease by detoxifying, adsorbing, and eliminating toxins that cause kidney disease from the body. In this presentation, we will introduce research on adsorbing intestinal pollutants (ammonia, cholesterol, etc.).

We will develop various products using silk as a raw material and promote business expansion. Our patented technology, "macromolecular silk fibroin aqueous solution," simply put, is a state where proteins called nanofibroin are dissolved in water in a mesh-like structure. This nanostructure has the property of adsorbing various substances, and it has been found to adsorb waste products such as ammonia and cholesterol. In particular, its ammonia adsorption rate is very high compared to other adsorbents, boasting an adsorption rate of over 90%.

Furthermore, regarding kidneys, one of the detrimental effects contributing to chronic kidney disease is excessive protein intake. Specifically, excessive consumption of protein, especially processed protein, burdens the kidneys. Substances like ammonia produced when these are ingested travel from the intestines to the bloodstream and then to the kidneys. The accumulation of waste products in the kidneys is one of the causes of chronic kidney disease. Our product aims to alleviate the burden on the kidneys by adsorbing intestinal waste products and eliminating them from the body.

The only ways to remove waste from the body are through feces and urine. Therefore, gut health is considered important. The surface area of the intestines is equivalent to a tennis court, and there should be nothing useless in the body through evolution. However, if that tennis court is damaged, even if you consume good nutrients, they may not be absorbed, or the body may spend energy cleaning the "tennis court" and not recover. Therefore, maintaining a healthy gut environment is crucial.

Another important organ is the kidney. The kidney has a structure like a moss ball of blood vessels, and because the blood vessels are very fine, nutrients and medicines have difficulty reaching it. Also, once its function declines, it is very difficult to recover. Therefore, when the kidneys become diseased, it often becomes necessary to resort to dialysis, which is an external method of replacing the role of the kidneys.

The structure of the kidney is like a coffee filter, where blood is filtered to produce urine. If this filter becomes dirty, kidney function will decline, just as you can't make good coffee. Causes of a dirty coffee filter include protein, uric acid, cholesterol, ammonia, artificial sweeteners, and additives. And the only way to clean a dirty coffee filter is to wash it with clean water. That's why drinking plenty of water is recommended. However, drinking water alone cannot remove the cause of the dirty filter.

We believe that the silk protein we are introducing today may enhance the body's ability to excrete waste products. When I first heard about silk protein, I was honestly skeptical. However, after reviewing various materials, I realized there was a lot of positive information.

For example, there was data showing that when diabetic mice were given silk protein, their pancreatic cells were activated, and blood sugar levels improved. Additionally, silk protein is known to have antioxidant properties, which can help remove "rust" from blood vessels, so it may also be effective for arteriosclerosis and other conditions.
